Indiana Unified Tax credit for the Elderly
A credit ranging from $40 to $140 for taxpayers who are age 65 or older, file a joint return if married, and have a federal adjusted gross income of less than $10,000. The person must not have been in prison for 180 days or more during the year.
How can a person apply for it?
If a person has to file an Indiana income tax return, it must be claimed on Form IT-40, which can be filed by mailing in a paper form or electronically. However, a person who does not have to file a state tax return can claim this credit by filing a Form SC-40, which can only be filed by mailing a paper form. The Benefit Bank can help individuals in both situations and can help determine on which form the person should claim the credit on.
When is the last day individuals can apply for this credit?
If the individuals claim the credit on their tax return (Form IT-40), then they must file it by the due date of their return. This is usually April 18th unless they filed for an extension, in which case it would be November 18th. If the individuals claim the credit on the separate form (Form SC-40), then the deadline to file is June 30th.
